M Night Shyamalan, a name associated with something breathtaking and amazing, has come out with "The Happening", a movie thought to be a turning point in his career, full of mind blowing movies like "Sixth Sense" and "Signs" and also mind blasting ‘The Village’ and ‘Lady in the Water’. Let’s check it out what’s so happening in ‘The Happening’!

Released on: 13th June, 2008
Genre: Drama, Sci Fi Direction and Screenplay writer: M Night Shyamalan Produced By: M Night Shyamalan, Samuel L Mercer, Barry Mendel Composer: James Newton Howard Star cast: Mark Walhberg, Zoey Deschanel, Spencer Breslin, John Leguizamo, Betty Buckley and Ashlyn Sanchez
Storyline/Synopsis: The existence of the whole mankind is in danger as a deadly air borne virus is resulting in the gravely mysterious changes in the behavioral pattern n which the people try to kill themselves. A Father, Elliot Moore, (played superbly by Mark Walhberg) is trying hard to protect his family from an unthinkable, unforeseeable and an uncontrollable Happening. The race for survival begins with a question; will the humanity be able to survive this quaint and destructive phenomenon? Strengths: Well! Speaking very frankly, I feel that the movie is suffering from too many weaknesses that it is difficult to point out the strengths (if any).
However, Mark Walhberg has done full justice to his role of a science teacher with an on-the-rocks marriage and delivered an impressive performance. His expressions are absolutely up to the mark especially the scene in which Walhberg tries to convince a difficult old lady, Betty Buckley, to let his group stay in her farmhouse.
The movie highlights the Global ecological issues and has a universal appeal to it (Hey! don’t laugh). Some scenes are indeed thrilling but the number of those scenes is very less.
Flaws: As I earlier said, ‘The Happening’ is full of loopholes and too many flaws that make it extremely disappointing, horrible and completely unrealistic. The Screenplay is missing and although after a decent beginning, the movie becomes purely unthinkable (pun intended).
The storyline loses the plot at most of the places and the dialogues are nothing short of a crap which needs to be cut. The point to be noted is that that the movie fails to convince, on the contrary it tests the patience of the audience.
And the Direction! Do I need to say something? Well! After watching the movie, Spielberg would take a sigh of relief that Night Shyamalan is definitely not the next Spielberg (Would you recommend Spielberg to watch this movie?????). The fact is that the movie has nothing so happening about it.
My Rating for the movie * i.e. One star out of five and that too just for the director to save him from committing suicide and take this star as a consolation to make a movie that shows his true calibre.
Special Tip: If you haven’t seen this movie at your nearest theatre till now, then you are lucky as it is highly not recommended to watch this in a theatre, so save your money and just wait for the DVD.
