Synopsis: Benjamin Barker, a man unjustly sent to prison by a lecherous judge, vows revenge, not only for that cruel punishment, but for the devastating consequences of what happened to his wife and daughter. When he returns to reopen his barber shop, Sweeney Todd becomes the Demon Barber of Fleet Street who "shaved the heads of gentlemen who never thereafter were heard from again."
Strengths * Johnny Depp’s unforgettable performance as Sweeney Todd * The most captivating factor in this movie is- the perfect match of the dark actor with the dark character * A wonderful characterization * A very touching music or songs * Burton proves his greatness in generating a sense of humor in spite of the gloom and death everywhere in the movie * Depp makes a really effective lead vocalist inspite of having a zero experience of having technically sung on screen * Engaging and quite entertaining * A great inspiration to get deep into the efforts done by the movie makers in presenting such masterpieces * A beautiful blending of love and death *
Flaws * Too gloomy and depressing * 95% of what you hear in the movie is the music instead of the dialogues * Haunts you for longer * Too much use of music and this sometimes really irritates the viewers * According to some, the ending of the story is not so convincing * There is no character in the movie whom you love, you can just hate them
Why should you go for this movie? One thing is for sure, I must say that you cannot stop loving this movie. Inspite of no love shown in the movie, you find something that really forces you to think really deep. A perfect script with a beautiful blend of death and love. The characters are so wonderfully portrayed that you will enter into their world.
This is the test of a good story. It’s a must watch!!!
Critic Reviews * "...feels heavier on style than on substance...Still, it's a gorgeous artifact and pretty enjoyable." Los Angeles Times - Carina Chocano * "Director Tim Burton has adapted Stephen Sondheim's Tony Award-winning musical in a darkly clever and comical fashion." USA Today - Claudia Puig * "...Sweeney is seamless, coherent and vibrant, with scarcely a trace of “Broadway.”" Variety - Todd McCarthy
