The review of ‘Max Payne’ would tell whether this eagerly awaited video game based movie lives up to the huge expectations or just fails to thrill the audiences. Directed by John Moore (of ‘Behind Enemy Lines’ and ‘The Omen’), the movie stars the talented Mark Wahlberg (the only happening thing in ‘The Happening’) and the dazzling Mila Kunis (Forgetting Sarah Marshall). ‘Max Payne’ is rated PG-13 for violence including intense shooting sequences, drug content, some sexuality and brief strong language. The review of the movie tells where it scores and where it fails to score!

Storyline/Synopsis: The story of the video game based movie ‘Max Payne’ revolves around DEA agent Max Payne (Mark Wahlberg), who after the death of his family is trying very hard to get over this unforgettable incident. Max is investigating some murder cases which have something to do with deadly Mafia. He is also accused of a colleague’s murder and now it is on Max to fight against Mafia and in this deadly revenge he is supported by Mona Sax (Mila Kunis), an assassin, who has some personal accounts to settle with the Mafia. But it is not an easy job as the enemy is far more dangerous than expected. Would Max and Sax (sounds cool, Max and Sax!) be able to get even with the deadly enemy? What happens next?

Strengths: The movie has got its strength in the visual effects and cinematography. At times, the movie visuals provide sheer delight to the eyes. Top grade cinematography which helps in keeping the aura of the theme intact is one of the few things that make this movie watch-able. Acting wise, Mark Wahlberg as Max Payne tries to do full justice to his character of Max Payne. Mila Kunis should do some more action flicks she looks tailor-made for these flicks. As Mona Sax, she is too good. Rest of the cast did not get much to do but still Rapper Chris ‘Ludacris’ Bridges is impressive.

Flaws: The biggest flaw in the movie is director’s inefficiency to take it to another level. Although Direction is not that bad but a director brings the best from his cast and crew to make the movie likeable. John Moore fails there and the movie gives an impression as if the direction was non-existent. Acting wise, No doubt Mark Wahlberg has done a decent job but for a character like Max Payne everyone expected an awesome performance and the sad part is that he could not take it to that level where it should have been taken. Casting directors should have thought about it seriously. After watching the movie even Mark would agree that he can do a much better job than this as the editing is too bad. The dialogues are just not up to the level, they are too hollow. Don’t even think about character development. Also, most people would agree with me when I say that the movie gets a bit boring more often. Speaking very frankly, the movie just fails to live up to the name of ‘Max Payne’; it is just not ‘Max Payne’.

Audience Verdict: Although audiences expected a lot from the movie, but the movie fails completely to live up to the expectations. Most of my fellow audiences were visibly unhappy with the movie and gave it a Thumps Down, yet there were a few others who though not loved it as such but still liked it. However, on an average the audience verdict is ** star i.e. two stars out of five.

My ratings for the Movie *1/2 i.e. one and a half stars out of Five. One for the top class visuals and another half for making such a cool trailers to make fool of the audiences and earning good money.

Check out ‘Max Payne’ at your nearest theatre if you want but we would suggest waiting for the DVD to come out and watching it on your home theatre system.
