Storyline/Synopsis: Set in the year 2020, Terminal Island, New York, Death Race; as the name suggests, the only way out is to kill or be killed. The story revolves around Jensen Ames (Jason Statham) a NASCAR champion who is charged for a crime he didn’t commit. The warden of the prison C. Hennessey (Joan Allen) offers him to drive in a brutal race and get his freedom. The rules of the Race are simple; there are no rules. The prisoners are to drive a car loaded with machine guns, grenade launchers, flamethrowers and every means to destroy the opponents. Every convict has no option but winning and getting his freedom or die trying. But only one can win this deadly race. This brutal but spectacular race has global audiences that just want to see the ultra violent race. The one who would win the race is supposed to win his freedom in prize, but there are some hidden secrets behind this. Would Jensen be able to win this race? What are the plans of the Warden? How deadly this Death race would prove?

The movie is rated R for strong violence and language.

Strengths: As Ian McShane says in the movie, "Now that’s entertainment", Death Race delivers what is expected of this action thriller namely mind blowing car smashing action effects, Pulsating camerawork, Cool dialogues and soon. Acting wise Jason Statham has done full justice to his role. It looks as if he is tailor made for such roles. Joan Allen is a treat to watch and ties her best to play her character impressively. All the other actors have delivered decent performances But Ian McShane and Tyrese Gibson are just too good. Natalie Martinez tries to give the much needed Oomph to the ‘Death Race’. Visual effects are sheer delight and Direction has everything what one expects from an R-rated action thriller. The futuristic vision is captured very effectively and a video game based on the movie is bound to be a hit. (However, I can’t say the same about the Movie).

Flaws: There are many flaws in the movie and the greatest flaw is that the storyline is somewhat predictable. There are many plots in the movie, which are easily predictable. Joan Allen tries her best but somehow fails to do complete justice with the character. Jason Statham is also getting typecast for such roles involving terrific action, driving and smashing cars and you know what I mean. The Fun element is also missing and that is what makes the Movie more serious than needed. Anyways, if you are an action flick lover, then Death Race would blow you away (and I am no different).

My ratings for the Movie *** i.e. three stars out of Five. One for Jason Statham, one for the futuristic vision and the third one for smashing effects that make the experience satisfying

Audience Verdict: After watching the movie, I got a chance to talk to my fellow audience and know their opinions about the movie. And I must say that most of them loved this Death Race. However, everyone admitted that while watching the movie, one gets a feeling as if one is watching some sort of Video game.

Audience Rating: 7 out of 10.
